The King of Depression

Hemmingway, possibly the king of all depressing authors.

Today, writing like this is frowned upon by most of society,  things like alcohol, drugs, guns, etc. Were not taken as heavily as they are today. It makes sense that this story would be a bit confusing for today’s generation. Due to lack of real world experience in today’s books. Back in the day things were not sugar coated like they are today. Books written by Hemingway and Fitzgerald were a hit with people. Over the years things change, it seems like today the thriving books are the ones that are about apocalypses and the future. Back in the 20’s things like Winter Dreams, were popular due to the nature of what  was popular back then.

There are still books that are dark, scary, and joyless today. Hemmingway was able to make a book dark and dreary even in a nice, well lighted tavern. Today if you wanted to make a book like this, you would have to set the scene to be dark and creepy. What adds to the creepiness is that Hemmingway, like the Old man. Was gloomy and eventually killed himself. Authors today don’t really put their problems into a character of a book. Hemmingway real put his feelings into this old man. The waiters symbolize the way other people have talked to him. He lets his emotion and what he thinks other people see him as, into the bars servers. One waiter really didn’t really like him, constantly talking about how much the old man drinks. The other waiter just asked questions, he didn’t want to say anything about the old man.

In conclusion, Hemmingway wasn’t the most cheerful of writers, but still managed to create some of the most rememberable of stories and readings, that still make people depressed today.

Point of View

 Authors Note: I took Curly from the book Hoot and put in his point of view for the first 3 times that things have been stolen or sabotaged on his construction site.

Why would someone do this? For fun? This was most likely some juvenile delinquents “Friday fun night.” But this was vandalism, now I have to make up for lost time and redo the entire survey. So I called the cops hoping too get a excuse for this mishap. But no, Mr. Young Gun said that this doesn’t count as vandalism. Aprearatly ruining someone’s entire 2 weeks’ worth of work isn’t a crime.

I am going to get in huge trouble for this one. All the seats of every vehicle are missing! One of those seats costs around $300 dollars and there are 5 missing! It would be impossible to work machines without seats. Now I have to call Mr. Chuck E Cheese up again and tell him the news, meaning my job is most likely gone. All because of some stupid kids and their hate or deranged love for pancakes. Now the line has been crossed. I’m going to sit here tonight and wait for them,  revolver ready.  

How long was I asleep? Even more important, where is my gun! I don’t see it anywhere! That delinquent is in for it now. I’m gonna punch- what was that? *Crunch* There it is again. It’s outside! As I look to my left there is a big kid digging under my trailer. He screeched started to run when I grabbed him by the collar when the police turn the corner! Perfect! I’ve caught the guy and now this whole thing is over. So now two things remain, I have to find my gun and call Mr. Cheese. 

When was the last time you fought for a lost cause? Well, in Hoot our superman is Roy fighting to save some helpless owls about to be crushed in their own homes. Roy really cares about these owls, and  not just because they are small and cute. But because he has been moved from house to house for his whole life. Again and again leaving to go somewhere else. Since he is so familiar with losing his own home, Roy is willing to fight for this lost cause.

Roy is doing everything to take out the organization that owns the land. Throughout  Hoot there are other quotes supporting Roy’s thoughts: “That land belonged to the owls long before it belonged to the pancake house” (171 ). This pancake house is run by a diabolical business man name Chuck Muckle. Chuck doesn’t care what stupid weak animal is on his land, so he plans to bury their homes. Protected or not he will just build his beautiful pancake house right over them. This would be illegal but no one even knows that they’re there. So as long as no one finds out, he can decimate the owl’s home without a care in the world.

There is a police man mixed up in this story too. Officer Delinko, a young cop making his way through the justice system in hopes of becoming a detective. He realizes that finding this young punk who is vandalizing Mother Paula’s, could be a huge break for him. So every night he drives by looking for the juvenile delinquent involved in this crime. “All he wanted was to solve the mystery” (36 ).  He's not a lost cause but he hasn't made the best of progress to meet him career goal. 

Relating to the Capital controlling people in The Hunger Games series. Both these books are against a strong powerful organization.  But there are people that stand up for what they believe in. They just like Roy are fighting for a lost cause.

Al aeropuerto - BLOG 2

Antes de salir a aeropuerto_________ yo tengo  hacer las maletas. Yo necesito traer mi _________Pasaporte________ porque voy en el extranjero. Yo voy a traer mucho ______Equipaje_______ a España conmigo. Yo voy a ir____ al aeropuerto en coche.

Cuando llegue al _Aeropuerto_____ habrá muchas cosas que hacer. Primero, tengo que __Confirmar__ que el vuelo sale a tiempo. No quiero que mi vuelo salga tarde. El ___Numero_____ del  vuelo es IB6247.

Segundo, yo voy a ___Facturar________  a la mujer pero yo puedo quedarme el equipaje de ________pasaporte___________.

Próximo, tengo que ______ir_____ por el control de ___________seguridad____________. No me gusta la máquina de rayo-X.  Después de esperar en una cola muy larga, yo puedo ir a la _________la pueta___________    _______de_______   ___________embarque__________.

A las 10:15 yo puedo embarcar en el ________avion__________. Ya hay muchos _____________passajeros_____________ en el avión. Yo paso por el frente de la cabina del ___________piloto____________. Él me saluda y es muy simpático.

Yo pongo mi __________equipaje_________ en el portaequipajes y pongo mi bolso bajo de la __________silla____________ enfrente de mí. La ___________azafata___________  empieza a explicar que hacer durante una emergencia. Tengo que _______ver______ un video de seguridad. Antes de despegar, la azafata me recuerda de abrocharme el _____________cinturon___________ de seguridad. ¡España, allá voy! 

Two Birds One Piece

Roy, a curious and smart kid on a mission to find the identity of the boy with no sneakers. After first seeing this kid he chases him. Through backyards, basketball courts, and even a golf course.  While running through the course he gets clobbered by a golf ball. Ending the chase. After some recuperation he sets out again.

Retracing his tracks he eventually finds where the boy was running to, a camp site. This “home” consist of a sleeping bag, a camp fire, and 3 strange bags. Curious, Roy opens them. The first one is cloths, the second is personal belongings. The third is poisonous snakes. Shocked, Roy drops the bag. Spreading highly poisonous snakes onto his feet. Suddenly he hears a voice behind him. The boy with no sneakers. Calmly, he tells Roy to back away. When he gets clear of the snakes the boy covers Roy’s head with a hood. Then leads him outside unmasks Roy and vanishes before Roy could see him. So Roy is still determined to find out who he is.

This time Roy leaves after school, unfortunately it is raining and when he gets to the camp there is nothing left.  Not even a foot print. This is the point where I stopped reading. So I predict that Roy will find out who this kid is and why he doesn’t wear shoes. But I don’t see what Beatrice has anything to do with this. I’m not sure why see was mentioned in the book. The way they did it makes me believe that she might have something to do with the kid. They might be friends, cousins, or even partners in crime. Overall I’m excited to find out how this will turn out, and what might happen if my guess is true.

I think that a spider is in the jar. I believe this because Mr. Mayson wanted him to move his face close to it, and when Roy asked if it was a little dude, Mr. Mayson replied yes. Leaving me to believe that it is a living thing.Then the scream as if something leaped onto him.

A Change for Good

Throughout the book Touching Spirit Bear, Cole Mathews attitude about life changes. He goes from a thug who robs stores and beats others to a stone rolling, wood chopping soft guy. All from one mercy-beating from a bear. 

During the beginning of the book Cole is a bad guy. Beating people, stealing, fighting, Cole is your stereotypical school-yard bully. He has a terrible view on life and spends many nights in detention centers. So after committing a robbery he eventually starts telling people about it. Not because he feels bad about it, but instead to gloat. Eventually someone named Peter, squeals on him and Cole finds out. Leading to Cole beating him so badly that he receives a mental disability. But instead of going to jail, Cole gets accepted to go a remote Alaskan island. Where he will think about his actions for the next 12 months. Now Cole in no ways feels bad about what he did to Peter. So to avoid jail time he chooses to except the offer and leaves to go to Alaska.

Apon arriving he gets a shack and supplies. The boat leaves and Cole is left alone on the island. With anger sweltering inside, he grab gasoline and some matches and sets the shack and supplies ablaze. Feeling better, he decides to escape. He fails and then his anger drives him to pick a fight with a bear. After losing he is left to die. He slowly awaits for death, thinking about his decisions and the effects on others. On the verge of passing out, he gets rescued and returns home. After recovering he is left with physical marks and a mental scare in his brain. Yet he still hasn’t healed; he gets sent back to the island and makes friends with nature, learning that the only way to heal himself is to help the people he hurt heal. After almost a year he asks if Peter can come to the island. After serious consideration, Peter and Peter’s parents join Cole on the island. After a few days Cole and Peter are left with Cole’s Parole Officer. During this time Cole and Peter learn to heal together. Throughout the stay Cole continues to manage his anger and eventually leaves the island with Peter as his friend.

Cole is tired of being the bad guy. He wants to become a spirit bear. With strength inside of him.

So throughout the next book Cole goes home and tries to continue with life. But without his normal routine he realizes returning home a new changed man, is the hardest challenge yet.
